Pelican Control Signals

A Pelican Signal Controller is typically installed at zebra crossings and other intersections where pedestrians cross the road and a standard Traffic Signal Controller is not viable to install (for e.g. on one way roads and pedestrian crossings in between two distant traffic signal controllers).

The primary responsibility of a Pelican Signal Controller is to provide an un-interrupted passage to vehicles till there are no pedestrians to cross the road and to provide safe passage to pedestrians when required. The Pelican Signal Controller also ensures that vehicles get a minimum amount of un-interrupted passage time despite pedestrians request to cross the road.

After the vehicles have been given sufficient passage time, it allows pedestrians to cross the road safely (only if a request has been registered by pedestrians to cross the road by pressing Push button in the Pedestrian Control Panel).

The controller also ensures that nuisance is not created by repetitive pressing of Push Button by ignoring push button when a request to cross the road has already been latched i.e. Amber Wait Signal is glowing or when Green Man Signal for Pedestrians is glowing. The controller also ignores short/momentary presses of push button and registers pedestrian’s request only if the push button is pressed for 2-3 seconds.

These Pelican Signals will run on the Solar Energy. In the day time the sun-rays will be absorbed through the Solar Photovoltaic Module installed on top of these signals and passed on to the lights of these Signals and simultaneously store the solar energy in the batteries as battery backup and to run these signals during nights and also in a situation when there is no sun in the day.

A Pelican Signal Controller consists of the following major components

Vehicular light signals on both sides of road

  • Red
  • Amber
  • Green Arrow

Pedestrian light signals on both sides of road

  • Red Man
  • Green Man

Pedestrian control panel on both sides of road

  • Amber color wait light
  • Push button to register request for crossing the road
  • Red signal corresponding to Red Man signal
  • Green signal corresponding to Green Man signal

Sequence of operations

When the unit is powered up, Green arrow for vehicles and Red man for pedestrians will glow and continue to glow. In the Pedestrian control panel, Red signal will be on and Amber color wait light for pedestrians will not be illuminated. Till the time any pedestrian does not press the push button installed at either sides of road, the status of signals mentioned above shall remain unchanged.

As soon as a pedestrian presses the push button and keeps it pressed for at least 2-3 seconds, Amber color wait light installed near the push button will glow in the pedestrian control panel indicating that his request for crossing the road has been registered and he needs to wait for Green Man signal to glow before he starts to cross the road. Green Man signal for the pedestrian will glow depending on the following conditions:

Minimum cycle time for vehicles has not elapsed yet

In this case, Green signal for vehicles and Red Man signal for pedestrians shall continue to glow. The Amber color wait signal will also continue to glow in the pedestrian control panel.

Minimum cycle time for vehicles has elapsed

In this case, Green signal for vehicles will turned be to Amber and then Red gradually. After the Red signal for vehicles has been turned on, Green Man signal for pedestrians will glow.

Pressing the push button when Amber color wait signal is glowing or when Green Man for pedestrians is glowing will have no effect.
